Trinity will return to Rupp Arena for the first time since 2004 when the Shamrocks reached the state tournament for the first time. In just the third year as head coach of the Shamrocks, Mike Szabo led Trinity to a win over University Heights (75-57 on Mar. 17, 2004) in the opening round before suffering a three-overtime loss to defending state champion and eventual state runner-up Mason County (66-59 on Mar. 19, 2004).
Trinity and St. Xavier met in the regional finals for the first time in program history and the first time in the postseason since 2001. The meeting of Catholic school rivals marked the first time since 1955 that two Catholic school teams had met in the 7th Region finals.
Trinity posted its 14th consecutive win, the second longest streak in program history, and have won 26 of their last 27 games. Trinity is now 28-1 against teams from the state of Kentucky this season.
With the win, Trinity completed the first undefeated season in program history against seventh region opponents. The Shamrocks were 12-0 against teams from one of the state’s toughest regions in 2011-2012. It is the first unblemished record for a team from the region since 2006-2007.
